The 12th Wide Angle Film Festival’s Public Program of Australian and international award-winning films will screen during International Day of people with disabilities on December 3rd. All films reflect the lived experience of people with disability. Don’t miss out on this exceptional free event as it tours Australia! Screenings are closed caption with audio descriptions, and free of flashing lights, with disabled access to available to the venue.

The 12th Wide Angle Film Festival brings the lived experience of people with disability to screens across the country through eight programs of award winning short films.

This important annual Australian cultural event responds to the absence of people with disability on our screens and fills this gap with enthralling films that receive high praise as they traverse the continent. All programs include an extensive suite of integrated access for people with disability ensuring that WAFF is an event many Australians can enjoy together. Access includes the removal of barriers for people who live with anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism and other sensory disability, epilepsy and mobility disability. There is access for people who are Deaf or people with low hearing, people who are blind or have low vision and people who don’t speak.

Wide Angle Film Festival Director Jacqueline Cosgrove says, “Many people don’t realise the extent to which people with disability are excluded from commercial cinema in Australia. It’s pretty tough if you can’t see a movie with your friends and family. Ramps, hearing loops and closed captions remove some barriers but there are still so many remaining. Even WAFF’s suite of access has a long way to go before the Festival is universally accessible, but we take a step closer every year.”
WAFF’s international and Australian award-winning short films demonstrate the diversity of the lived experience of people with disability, the richness of their stories and the extent of their capacity as filmmakers. The 12th WAFF includes stories about the life and working world of a female drag queen, an ex-soldier who makes prothesis, a refugee who became an award winning artist, an action hero who recovers a stolen wallet and an extraordinarily poetic representation of Synaesthesia.

Wide Angle Film Festival is marked by the diversity of its venues which include hotels in remote communities, outdoor fixed screens in urban environments, commercial cinemas, art galleries and even swimming pools. All screenings are free of charge.
