SPREADING JOY WITH NEEDLE AND THREAD

Mount Gambier Branch of the South Australian Embroiderers’ Guild

15 January to 4 February 2024
Southlink

Mount Gambier Branch of the South Australian Embroiderers’ Guild is a small group of needle and thread artisans. We create amazing art pieces from just a few items – needle, fabric and thread. From the traditional skills of the past, to modern self-expressive contemporary pieces. Utilising basic stitches from straight to more complex knotted, each stitch comes alive with the added lustre and texture of various threads. Why do we spend endless hours with just these few simple tools to work with? It is the passion to create, explore and generate items of beauty. It is the satisfaction of changing a piece of fabric into an art piece which brings us to a deep personal sense of achievement. Stitching tells a story and becomes an intricate part of the artist behind the needle. Through threads and fabrics we develop a keen sense of colour, design and textures, encouraging us to look beyond our comfort zones and out into the wider world. Stitching simply brings us joy.

We acknowledge the Boandik Peoples as the traditional custodians of the land we meet on today. We respect their spiritual relationship with the land and recognise the deep feelings of attachment our First Nations Peoples have with the land.
